Lessons
AppleWood Stables is primarily a lesson facility. We have several excellent
horses and ponies for all levels of riders. Currently there are 12-15 horses
in the school program, all coming from different backgrounds to ensure
there is something for everyone. We cater to all levels of experience.
Our lesson program is run by certified instructors who are friendly,
courteous and qualified to ensure the best riding experience possible.
Students are assigned to horses appropriate for their level of riding.
Our kind and patient schoolies help to provide an atmosphere that
develops riders of all ages and challenges. Whether you’re working
on balance, posting diagonals or flying changes, we have a horse that will
help bring out the best in you. Our horses are our pride and joy and they
are treated like family, receiving only the best of care.
Lessons run five days a week, both in the daytime and evening hours. Private lessons are available in either 30 or 45 minute sessions. Group classes are one hour in length and kept to smaller numbers to ensure progress for all students. Students are grouped by age and ability.
We ask all riders to arrive 30 minutes before their class begins to properly prepare their horse for the ride. Horsemanship skills are taught and maintained by the coaches and staff, ensuring a safe and well-rounded education for all.
Lessons run on a monthly basis, with opportunity for change and new enrollment at the beginning of each month.
Please enquire for pricing and availability.
Our instructors are only half the team. We have a variety of well-trained horses and ponies that are quiet, friendly and suitable for all riding levels. Set up a tour to meet your instructors and equine partners.
Leasing
If you are looking to get more time in the saddle and barn with your favourite equine partner,
perhaps leasing is a good fit for you! Leasing is just one extension of our lesson program.
We always have a variety of horses available for lease to current clients.
Leasers must maintain monthly lesson times (included in the lease fee), and are able to ride 3-5 times
per week, depending upon the lease terms.
Ask our coaches about availability and options.
Equine Canada Rider Level
Here at AppleWood, we frequently run a 12 week preparatory Rider Level course.
The aim is to set up students for success in their rider level exams. After the 12 week
course, students will take part in ridden, written and horsemanship exams in hopes
of achieving their Equine Canada certificates.
Throughout the weekly course students can expect to learn a variety of subjects that
would not be covered in their regular riding lessons. As part of the course, they will
receive handouts and course materials which they can take home to study/review.
All theory and horsemanship will be covered in our sessions.
In addition to the written work, there will also be ridden lessons provided.
This is what Equine Canada has to say about the Program:
"The EC Learn to Ride program was developed for individuals who wish to learn safe horsemanship and practices. The purpose of this program is to produce safe and knowledgeable horseman and to assist in the development of future instructors and coaches. The Rider Level 1-10 program is a national program with national standards that rewards all riders, recreational to competitive, for advancing their learning with Certificates of Achievement and badges. This program provides riders and coaches with an attainable progression throughout the rider level framework. In addition, encourages all riders to ride, learn and enjoy the sport of riding while providing guidelines to coaches and instructors."
Summer Camp
Summer Camp is an excellent way for students to be introduced to horses and the sport of riding! Students can be accepted without any previous riding experience. Campers are grouped according to age and experience and riders will continue for the week in those groups.
Camp can also be fantastic for current students to gain confidence and advance their skills. With completing 10 lessons over the 5 days of camp, we often see huge improvement in such a short timeframe! Camp is the ultimate way to make new friends and learn new skills. The fun and friendships made at camp last a lifetime!
At camp, students are encouraged to learn from the following topics:
-
Rider Safety
-
Horse Safety
-
Tack and Care

Show Team
Training/Starting
Our team at AppleWood is well known for starting young horses regardless of their intended discipline. We have several horses on site that were started here with us, that speak to the level of training and amount of time invested. We strive to ensure all horses meet all agreed training requirements at the end of the agreed session.
Our trainers are safe and keen to build trust and confidence in young/nervous horses. Whether it is starting or restarting, contact us with your goals and intentions for your equine partner to see if we are the right fit for you.
All horses, at all times, are treated with respect and kindness.
Select students are invited to join our show team. This is an extension of our regular lesson program whereby we travel to local facilities for competition. We specialize in hunter, equitation and ponies.
Our reputation is for outstanding quality horses and riders in competition rings in our region.
AppleWood is an excellent place to train. Much of horse showing is learnt outside the show ring. Show team riders develop a strong work ethic and gain confidence and independence on the home farm also.
With the show team we offer:
-
Multiple weekly lessons
-
Clinics
-
Extensive flatwork and conditioning
-
Off property schoolings
-
Goal setting and show prep meetings
-
Jump school classes
Breeding/Sales
Here at AppleWood we have a small broodmare band of quality mares that are bred to outside stallions to produce foals that are sound in mind and limb. All of our broodmares started out in our lesson program, and therefore are of excellent temperaments, which they pass along to their foals.
Our foals are well handled and exposed to many new things and experiences before they move on to new homes. All babies have basic handling before time of sale. They all bath, tie and lead. They are all happy to be groomed and fussed over and stand politely for the vet and farrier. We strive to mould foals into safe, sensible and teachable young horses.
Contact us for our current sales list for either young stock or mature riding horses.
